Meet Dr. Lauren L. Donnangelo, MD, ABOM

Dr. Lauren Donnangelo joins True You Weight Loss after completing Gastroenterology and Hepatology fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. She is board certified in Obesity Medicine and Internal Medicine, board certified in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and certified in Endoscopic Suturing through the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) STAR Program. As one of the country’s first dedicated bariatric and metabolic endoscopists, Dr. Donnangelo is passionate about providing state-of-the-art, compassionate, and life-changing care to patients with obesity and obesity-related medical conditions.

Education and Expertise

Dr. Donnangelo earned her undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science with a Certificate in Spirituality and Health from the University of Florida Medical Honors Program, where she was a John V. Lombardi Scholar and graduated Summa Cum Laude with Honors in Research. She completed an accelerated combined BS/MD at the University of Florida College of Medicine where she was elected President of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and received the William Osler Award for excellence in clinical medicine. Dr. Donnangelo went on to complete her Internal Medicine residency at Duke University Hospital in the Medical Education Leadership and Clinical Epidemiology tracks. She completed Gastroenterology and Hepatology fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital. During fellowship, she became board certified in Obesity Medicine though coursework at Columbia University/Weill Cornell and trained in bariatric endoscopy under Dr. Christopher McGowan.

Throughout her training, Dr. Donnangelo has dedicated herself to comprehensive research in the areas of gastroenterology, hepatology, medical education, and obesity. Highly regarded for her work, Dr. Donnangelo has received numerous grants, awards, and special recognitions. She was the recipient of a national research grant from the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Academy of Educators and a Duke Faculty-Resident Research Grant. She has completed grant-funded research fellowships through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Science for Life Program and the Lawrence M. Goodman Research Trust. Dr. Donnangelo was named an Emerging Liver Scholar by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) Foundation in 2019. She has received multiple research awards, and her work has been featured in leading medical journals including Obesity Surgery, Gastroenterology, and Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Dr. Donnangelo is also an accomplished presenter, having shared her expertise at numerous conferences and annual meetings including Digestive Disease Week (DDW) plenary sessions and as an invited speaker at academic medical grand rounds.

Passionate about medical education, Dr. Donnangelo has served as a clinical lecturer, small group leader, and course facilitator for medical students, residents, and fellows. She has contributed her knowledge to the Duke Internal Medicine resident handbook and the online gastroenterology curriculum GI-SIM. During fellowship, she designed a curriculum on teaching communication skills and served as a member of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) Education Universe Editorial Board. She has volunteered her time teaching medical students and residents at clinics for underserved patients in Gainesville Florida, Durham North Carolina, and East Harlem New York, for which she received a service award.

Dr. Donnangelo is a member of the Obesity Medicine Association (OMA), American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), and the American Foregut Society (AFS). She is certified in Motivational Interviewing and completed a Certificate in Lifestyle Medicine and Food as Medicine through the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM).

Dr. Donnangelo enjoys travel and has studied in Mexico and South Africa. Her passion for global health and volunteering has also brought her to Ecuador, Jamaica, Nicaragua, and Peru. Outside of work, she enjoys the outdoors, cooking, and spending time with friends and family.
