Meet Dr. Daniel B. Maselli, MD, ABOM

Dr. Dan Maselli is a Massachusetts native who is triple-board-certified in internal medicine, gastroenterology, and obesity medicine. As one of the country’s first dedicated endobariatric physicians, Dr. Maselli is passionate about using his knowledge, training, and vast skillset to help treat patients who are struggling with obesity and obesity-related issues.

Education and Expertise

Throughout his medical training and beyond, Dr. Maselli has worked with exceptional mentors and leaders in the field of gastroenterology to research obesity and the treatments, medications and procedures that can fight the disease. He has dedicated his professional life to helping patients find safe, effective, and non-surgical ways to lose weight and achieve a healthier lifestyle.

As a result, Dr. Maselli has published multiple articles, reviews, videos, and book chapters on the medical and endoscopic management of obesity and its associated conditions, and he has presented at scientific meetings on topics such as obesity treatment and bariatric revision procedures. Dr. Maselli’s areas of interest include endoscopic bariatric therapies for treatment of liver disease, gastric motility in obesity and following endoscopic bariatric therapy, combined use of endoscopic bariatric therapy and weight-loss medications, personalized endoscopic bariatric therapies, and endoscopic revision of bariatric surgeries.

His work has been published in many prestigious medical publications, including The Lancet, Gastroenterology, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Obesity Surgery, Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases, and Clinical Journal of Gastroenterology. A thought leader in the field, Dr. Maselli is enthusiastic about continuing to conduct leading-edge research to help develop and refine endobariatric procedures so he can provide the most effective, state-of-the-art therapies for his patients.

Dr. Maselli earned his undergraduate degree in molecular biology and neuroscience at Princeton University, and his medical degree at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (renamed UMass Chan Medical School in 2021). There, he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical and Gold Humanism Honor Societies. Later, Dr. Maselli completed a residency in internal medicine at Duke University Hospital, where he received an award for excellence in clinical medicine.

He followed his residency with a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at the Mayo Clinic, where he completed a postdoctoral certificate program in clinical and translational research and was honored for excellence in patient care. He subsequently completed a one-year advanced fellowship in interventional endoscopy at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. There, he also served as an instructor of medicine. Dr. Maselli is also certified in Motivational Interviewing, a goal directed counseling style designed to help individuals resolve internal ambivalence and harness the motivation to create positive behavior change. This evidence-based method improves treatment outcomes by supporting patients on their journey while strengthening their motivations and well-being.

Always inspired to teach others, Dr. Maselli received several awards for medical education while at the UMass Medical School and Duke University Hospital. He is passionate about the future of endobariatric medicine and is committed to mentoring the next generation of endobariatric gastroenterologists. He was selected to serve as a member of the Obesity Medical Association's Clinician in Training Educational Committee for the 2023 term.

In his free time, Dr. Maselli enjoys spending time with his family, and playing the bagpipes, piano, banjo, or any instrument he can get his hands on.
